“You could’ve been an astronaut,” Magda said.
“Don’t start, Maggie.” Darya ushered the kids in, balancing three heavy bags of Chinese food. Tommy’s family owned their own restaurant, and his mother always gave her extra egg rolls and fortune cookies.
Between them, Luca and Anya circled like vultures, each making a grab for the bags.
Darya swung them out of reach. “We make the best with what we have, and besides—” She gently nudged Luca aside and ordered her to clean up and change. “—how would I find time to have kids?”
