CH 131 — The Importance of Names

As lovely as it was to be reunited with Zelamir, the gang had to retire to their respective inns. Meike in particular felt tired from the combination of good food and company. Hugs and warm goodbyes were exchanged, and then they were all plunged back into the cold.

Meike shivered, dipping their chin in the collar of their fur coat. It was so nice and cozy in Laken’s estate that they forgot the frigid weather air. They sought further warmth within the confines of their group, but the numbers dwindled once they reached the city at large. Most people were home in their beds at this point, leaving only stragglers like them on the streets. Except for the few determined workers who twirled glowing shawls, beckoning for potential customers to join them.

For what, Meike didn’t know.

After seeing a line of these mysterious strangers and the colorful signs and buildings behind them, Meike turned to Cass for answers. She stole a glance at the last of these wonders, a woman dressed too lightly for the weather.

“Why, thinking about hiring one?” Cass liked to tease now and then, but tonight it was especially perplexing.

“For what?”

“They’re people you hire for adult stuff,” Teddy said, ending the conversation.
