That morning, Meike was jolted awake by boisterous cheer, and a very snippy Cass demanding quiet. She was still chewing Teddy out when Meike finally stumbled out of bed, rubbing the sleep from their eyes.

“Damn you, boy! You’ll wake up half the country!”

What had she said about irony? But Meike didn’t want to attract Cass’ ire, instead waiting for an explanation. Pickles had poked his head in to see what all the fuss was about, and Vivica was right behind him, yawning.

Teddy stammered to defend himself, cheeks flushed. “I said I was sorry! But wouldn’t you get excited, too? They accepted my offering and even left me a thank you note!”

“I don’t care if the Queen herself floated in on a winged horse and offered you the key to the city! There’s no need to be so damned loud this early in the morning!”

Again, her volume now rivaled the very thing she railed against. Meike decided to intervene in the gentlest way possible. “What did the letter say, Teddy?”
