CH 123 — Handle With Care

Fortunately for Meike, the door to the infirmary was large enough for them to almost comfortably walk through; they just had to lower their head. This was the only time in their life that they felt even remotely “tall”. Erzin was maybe 4’9 at best. He paused in the middle of a round room, which Meike was surprised to see had thin grooves along the wall.

They tentatively held a hand by one now, and was startled to feel the cool touch of wind. Any light provided came from wisps that drifted around the ceiling. Pale fabric shrouded individual beds, but by squinting they made out darkened figures huddled beneath blankets. The odds of cross contamination was hopefully low, otherwise...

Meike joined Erzin at the center. “I counted four patients. Is that all?”

He nodded. “Most of our ill prefer to stay in the confines of their homes, and they only have moderate symptoms at best.” Erzin’s face fell. “But these four are dreadfully ill, and I worry we may lose them if we don’t act fast.”

They eyed a thin curtain as its inhabitant began to cough, a nasty wet thing. “Tell me everything I need to know.”
