Oddly enough, the only one not enthused about the house was Vivica. The wolf refused to sleep in it or stay for long, and she kept worrying one spot in particular, pawing and growling at it.

“Vivica, come back from there!”

She padded over, head lowered, but lips still curled in a silent snarl. It was the oddest thing, but animals were funny like that. When something went wrong, they were the first to know, but who would take the word of a dog? Or wolf, in Vivica’s case.

Meike, humoring Vivica, inspected the area. It was a spot beneath their desk, an ordinary piece of gnarled wood. Perhaps it was the desk itself that upset her? It was old, after all, and influenced by Maggie’s presence. Saffron and Alek were similarly wary, but didn’t let that stop them from enjoying the house. Only Vivica made a fuss and insisted on sleeping outside.
