Backlog Update #5: The Cursed House

Got a small update for last month, but for a good reason! Visual novels can get really bulky, y'all.

Cattails: I just wasn't impressed with this one. I'm not entirely sure why I bought it in the first place, other than "Stardew Valley, but with cats". It definitely didn't live up to whatever image I had of it in my head. I think people who loved the Warrior Cats series would enjoy it, however.

The House In Fata Morgana: Took me a whole month and almost fifty hours to get through this one, but it was worth it! It's easily one of my favorite VN's of all time. It takes place in a "cursed" mansion, and you follow the protagonist as they are led to various doors with their own tragedies by the solitary maid. I wasn't sure what the deal with the doors fully meant until the real meat of the story, and then everything just fell into place. On top of that, the visuals and music really make the atmosphere of the game, and like any good Gothic horror, the story really knows how to engage the reader.

I definitely recommend the series, and it's available on various consoles (most recently the Switch), with updated art and a sequel and a slew of short stories. I've only played the original PC version, but look forward to replaying it all over again on the Switch.

Observation: This was...rather disappointing. I bought this because it had an interesting concept, a spaceship exploration game from the perspective of a bot, determining the fate of the crew, etc. But I had trouble progressing through the beginning of the game. My controls weren't working? And the game doesn't hold your hand, which I'm normally okay with, but this was unacceptable. And then learning that it's a glorified movie with some cheap puzzles didn't make me feel any better. Dropped this one like a hot potato.
